Reporting built straight on top of an operational database is reporting that breaks whenever the operational schema moves, and that competes with the application for the same rows.
- What I built
The extract, transform and load runs as an Integration Services package, so the shaping happens once on a schedule rather than inside every query. The Reporting Services report reads what the package produced, which keeps the report's definition of a figure in one place instead of in each person's spreadsheet.
